Palanor and Trading Economics

Trading Economics publishes economic indicators, market data and forecasts for 196 countries. Palanor reads fewer series, deepest on the United States, and records the source and license of each one, then builds Custom Indices, Schemas and Currents on top. This page sets out where the two overlap and how to use both.

What they do

Trading Economics

  • Trading Economics “provides its users with accurate information for 196 countries including historical data and forecasts for more than 20 million economic indicators, exchange rates, stock market indexes, government bond yields and commodity prices.”[1]
  • Its data “is based on official sources, not third party data providers”, and each indicator page names its source, for example the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics for U.S. inflation.[1][6]
  • Forecasts “are built using a proprietary global macro model that takes into account our analysts’ expectations, correlations between countries, and a set of logical relationships between different indicators.”[4]
  • Access through the website, a REST API with Python and Node.js packages, an Excel add-in and an MCP server that exposes “economic indicators, market prices, forecasts, calendar events, and company financials”.[3][5]
  • Published plans start at $29.99 a month (Basic, without API access). API plans are $199 a month (Standard) and $399 a month (Professional); Enterprise is “customized and priced to your needs” and can “redistribute data to your clients and partners under enterprise licensing.”[3]

What each does that the other doesn’t

Only Trading Economics

  • Breadth: 196 countries and more than 20 million indicators[1]
  • Market quotes for currencies, bonds, commodities and stock indexes[1]
  • Indicator forecasts through the API[2][4]
  • An economic calendar, and redistribution or white-label display under enterprise licensing[3]

Only Palanor

When to choose which

And how to use both.

Choose Trading Economics when

  • You need a number for almost any country, quickly.
  • You want a published forecast for an indicator, or market quotes and a calendar in the same place.

Choose Palanor when

  • You need to know what U.S. series mean together, through indices and readings whose method is published.
  • You need the license of every number you pass on, checked before it is served.
  • You want macro and company filings in one schema, under one key.

Use both

  • Take cross-country breadth and forecasts from Trading Economics. Use Palanor for provenance-checked series and the derived reads built on them.
  • Set a Trading Economics forecast beside the Palanor series and indices that bear on it.

Questions

Is there a free alternative to the Trading Economics API?
Palanor’s API has a free tier of 1,000 requests a month, values included, for its redistributable series, Custom Indices and Currents. It covers far fewer countries than Trading Economics. Many primary publishers, including BLS, BEA, EIA and the World Bank, also run free APIs.
Where does Trading Economics get its data?
Trading Economics says its indicator data “is based on official sources, not third party data providers”, and each indicator page names its source.
How are Trading Economics forecasts made?
Its documentation says they come from a proprietary global macro model that takes into account its analysts’ expectations, correlations between countries and relationships between indicators.
How does Palanor show where a number came from?
Every signal in an API or MCP response carries a provenance block naming the source, the publisher, the license class and the attribution owed. The API serves a signal only when its source may be redistributed.
