Palanor and Macrobond

Macrobond is a macroeconomic data platform: hundreds of millions of time series from thousands of sources, licensed add-on databases and a desktop analysis application. Palanor reads a smaller set of public series, records the source and license of each, and builds Custom Indices, Schemas and Currents on them. This page sets out where the two overlap and how to use both.

What they do

Macrobond

  • Macrobond is “a macroeconomic data platform built on trusted time series data designed to support advanced models and AI workflows.” It started in Malmö in 2008.[1]
  • Its data page lists 290M+ time series from 2,000 sources, “with more than half offering point-in-time data”. Its homepage gives 300M+.[2][8]
  • Licensed add-ons from “premium providers including Bloomberg, FactSet, and S&P” and more than 20 specialized databases, available at additional cost.[3][5]
  • Every series carries “the revision history, detailed source information, and explanatory notes that show where the data came from and how it has been handled.”[3]
  • Analysis tools: one-click calculations, charting, a chart library, and Excel and PowerPoint integration.[4]
  • Access through a Web API, Python, R, Excel and data feeds, and, since June 2026, an AI Data Feed with MCP, which “requires an AI Data Feed Service license entitlement”.[6][7]
  • Lite, Pro and Enterprise offerings. No prices are published.[5]

What Palanor does

Palanor

  • 4,600+ public signals from primary publishers, each resolved to a source in a provenance ledger with its license class. Signals catalog →
  • The API and MCP serve a series only when its license allows redistribution: 71 of 129 sources today. Provenance →
  • Derived intelligence on those series: 40 Custom Indices with published methods, Schema readings and Currents. Custom Indices →
  • Company datasets refined from SEC filings for the S&P 500, in the same schema. Refined datasets →

What each does that the other doesn’t

Only Macrobond

  • Breadth: hundreds of millions of series, many with point-in-time vintages[2]
  • Licensed add-on databases, including Bloomberg, FactSet and S&P[3]
  • A desktop analysis application with calculations, charting and Office integration[4]
  • Data feeds into FTP, Snowflake and Databricks[6]

Only Palanor

When to choose which

And how to use both.

Choose Macrobond when

  • Your economists need breadth, licensed databases and point-in-time vintages in one desktop tool.
  • You chart and model series all day and publish into Office documents.

Choose Palanor when

  • You need the reading more than the raw series: indices, stages and named motions with a published method.
  • You need a checked license on every number before it is passed on.
  • You want macro, markets and company filings in one schema, under one key.

Use both

  • Keep Macrobond as the time-series warehouse. Pull Palanor’s Custom Index values and readings through the API into the same models.
  • Use Palanor’s provenance block to check which of its series may be redistributed before they go into a client deliverable.

Questions

Is there a cheaper alternative to Macrobond?
Not one-for-one. Macrobond’s value is breadth and licensed databases. Palanor has a free API tier for its redistributable public series, Custom Indices and Currents, but it covers far fewer series and has no desktop charting application.
Does Macrobond publish its pricing?
No. Its offerings page lists Lite, Pro and Enterprise without prices.
Can I use Macrobond data with Claude or ChatGPT?
Macrobond’s AI Data Feed connects AI chat interfaces through MCP. Its announcement says access requires an AI Data Feed Service license entitlement. Palanor MCP works with a free Palanor key.
What does Palanor add that a macro database doesn’t?
Readings computed from the series, with published methods: 40 Custom Indices, Schema readings and Currents, plus company data refined from SEC filings. Every value served carries its source and license.
