Tech Share of Congress Members' S&P 500 Stock Holdings (Annual, Range Midpoint)

Methodology
## What this measures
Of all the S&P 500 shares and options listed on members of Congress' annual financial disclosure reports in a year (member, spouse and dependent children), the percentage in Information Technology companies. Holdings are valued at the midpoint of each filed value range (range midpoint), because the law asks for ranges, not amounts. One value per report year, from 2016, dated December 31.
## Why it matters
Congress writes the rules for technology: antitrust, privacy, chips, artificial intelligence. This shows how much of lawmakers' disclosed stock exposure sits in the sector, as a share, without singling out anyone.
## How to read it
Higher means a larger slice of members' disclosed S&P 500 holdings is in technology companies. The index's own tech weight rose over the period, so compare with that. A few large holdings can move the share, because ranges run up to "Over $50,000,000"; the summed midpoint and the number of members holding are in each observation's metadata.
## What it does not say
Ranges, not amounts: a $1,001–$15,000 holding counts as $8,000.50, and open-ended ranges count at their floor. Sectors are Palanor's company sectors, which differ from GICS in places (some internet companies sit in Information Technology). Funds are left out, so tech held through index funds is not counted. S&P 500 membership is today's list applied to every year. Paper-filed reports are not read. Every member and every party counts the same way.

## Revision — 2026-09-26
Universe updated to current S&P 500 constituents (8 out, 3 in). Out: Builders FirstSource, Molson Coors and The Trade Desk, which left the index on 21 September 2026; Electronic Arts, which was taken private and left on 5 August 2026; and MongoDB, Cloudflare, Snowflake and Zoom, which were never members and had been included in error since May 2026. In: Bloom Energy, Everpure and Illumina, which joined on 21 September 2026. Membership now comes from a dated constituent list refreshed monthly. The corrected list applies from 26 September 2026. Readings before that date are unchanged.
