Where a signal stands

Percentile, record high and low, changes, moving averages and unusualness for every signal.

Updated 2026-09-24

A number on its own doesn't tell you much. Every signal page now has a Where it stands panel, directly under the history chart. It places the latest reading in the signal's own record.

What the panel shows

  • **The strip.** It runs from the record low to the record high. The shaded band is the last year's range, the tick is the 1-year average, and the dot is today.
  • **Percentile.** The share of readings since the series starts that sit below today's. It is shown over the full record and over the last 5 years.
  • **Highest or lowest since.** Shown only when the streak spans at least three of the series' own intervals. A one-reading streak says nothing.
  • **Change.** Over 30 days, 90 days and 1 year. Percent-unit signals such as unemployment show the change in points.
  • **Averages.** The 30-day, 90-day and 1-year moving averages, and whether today sits above or below each.
  • **Unusualness.** How many standard deviations today sits from the 1-year and 5-year averages. Two or more is unusual.

How to read "record"

Record means since the series starts in Palanor, not all of history. The panel always names the start. Some series begin in 2016 or later, so their record covers only those years.

Windows follow the series

A monthly series gets a 1-month change, not a 30-day one. A quarterly series gets a quarter and a year. A window shorter than the series' own spacing is left blank rather than filled with a misleading number.

Using it in scenarios

The Signal Map on each scenario shows the same read under every mapped signal. When you set a contingent threshold, the record range sits next to the box so you can place it against history.

Numen reads the same context when it recommends or explains a signal. The API and the Palanor MCP return it as a context object on every signal.

The stats refresh twice a day, at 11:05 and 23:05 UTC.
