Industry sizes

How big each US industry is, by NAICS code, from the Census Bureau, BEA and BLS, with the source and period of every figure.

Industries at palanor.com/industries shows the size of every US industry, by NAICS code. Every figure was published by a federal statistical agency. Palanor does not estimate or model any of them.

What each industry page shows

  • **Key figures.** The latest receipts, value added, revenue or sales, employment and establishments, each with its period and source.
  • **How it has changed.** A chart for each series with enough history. Hover a point for its value. Open Show the numbers for the table, gaps included.
  • **Every published measure.** Each source and measure, its latest value, and how far back it goes.
  • **Industries within.** The next level down the NAICS hierarchy, each with its own page.
  • **Public companies in this industry.** Companies whose GICS classification maps to the code.

Where the numbers come from

  • **Economic Census.** Receipts, firms, establishments, employment and payroll, every five years (2017, 2022).
  • **County Business Patterns.** Establishments, employment and payroll, every year.
  • **Quarterly Services Survey.** Revenue for services industries, every quarter.
  • **Monthly Retail Trade and Annual Retail Trade surveys.** Retail sales by kind of business.
  • **BEA GDP by Industry.** Value added, the industry's contribution to GDP.
  • **BLS Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages.** Private jobs, establishments and wages, every quarter.

Missing is missing

When an agency didn't publish a period, the chart breaks and the table says Not published. When it withheld a figure, for instance to protect a single company's data, the table says Withheld with the agency's flag. Palanor never fills either.

Reading across sources

Each program counts a different universe: employer firms, private ownership, or all establishments. Their figures are not meant to add up to one another. Where a series switched NAICS editions, the chart marks the change with a dashed line.

On company pages

Each company page in Discourse has an Industry panel. It shows the size of the whole US industry the company sits in, not the company's own numbers. The link from GICS to NAICS is Palanor's, one sub-industry to one code.

In the API and MCP

The same data is at /v1/industries in the API and palanor_get_industry in the MCP. Headline series, such as IT services revenue and hospital employment, are also signals you can add to a watchlist or scenario. The ledger refreshes daily.
